THE QUEEN OF SHEBA AND HER ONLY SON MENYELEK (KEBRA NAGAST)

Translated by Wallis Budge

And He drove him out of the Garden, because of his apostasy through the sin of the Serpent and the plotting of the Devil. And at that sorrowful moment Cain was born, and when Adam saw that the face of Cain was ill-tempered and his appearance evil he was sad. And then Abel was born, and when Adam saw that his appearance was good and his face good-tempered he said, <This is my son, the heir of my kingdom.> (…) Cain was envious, first because of the words of his father; and secondly, because of his sister with the beautiful face, who was born with him and who had been given unto Abel, even as God commanded them to multiply and fill the earth – now the face of the sister who had been born with Abel resembled that of Cain [quantos gêmeos cruzados nesta historieta!], and their father had transferred the two sisters when giving them in marriage; – and thirdly, because when the two brothers offered up sacrifice, God accepted the offering of Abel and rejected the offering of Cain. (…) And having killed his brother, Cain fell into a state of trembling and horrible fright, and he was repulsed by his father and his Lord. And then Seth was born, and Adam looked upon him and said, <Now hath God shown compassion upon me, and He hath given unto me the light of my face. In sorrowful remembrance I will console myself (?) with him. The name of him that shall slay my heir shall be blotted out, even to his ninth generation.Que espécie de livro não é entendido nem pelos próprios tradutores? the sons of Cain ate, drank and danced, and they played upon stringed instruments, and sang lewd songs thereto, and they worked uncleanness without law, without measure, and without rule.”

Though heaven and earth pass away My word shall not pass away.”

Deus, o Bipolar

“And in later days God took vengeance upon the sons of Canaan, and made the sons of Shem to inherit their country.”

And they slaughtered their sons and their daughters to the devils” Que ironia.

Abraão é o nono descendente de Canaã. Seu pai se chamava Terah.

And I will bring down the Tabernacle of My Convenant upon the earth 7 generations after thee”

“and although he [Rubem] was the firstborn son the kingdom was rent from him. And his younger brother reigned, and he was called Judah because of this.”

And again he saith by the mouth of the Holy Ghost, <And My habitation is here, for I have chosen it.>”

The Emperor of Rôm [Constantinopla] is the son of Solomon, and the Emperor of Ethiopia is the firstborn and eldest son of Solomon.”

Now in the days of Solomon the King gold was as common as bronze, and silver as lead, and bronze and lead and iron were as abundant as the grass of the fields and the reeds of the desert and cedarwood was also abundant.”

for wisdom is far better than treasure of gold and silver, and wisdom is the best of everything that hath been created on the earth. Now unto what under the heavens shall wisdom be compared? It is sweeter than honey, and it maketh one to rejoice more than wine, and it illumineth more than the sun, and it is to be loved more than precious stones. And it fatteneth more than oil, and it satisfieth more than dainty meats, and it giveth more renown than thousands of gold and silver. (…) it is a teacher of those who are learned, and it is a consoler of those who are discreet and prudent, and it giveth fame to those who seek after it. (…) no man can filch [surrupiar] it from his heart. That which fools heap up the wise consume.”

So she made ready to set out. And 797 camels were loaded, and mules and asses innumerable were loaded, and she set out on her journey and followed her road without pause, and her heart had confidence in God.”

And thou, although thou dost not know the God is Israel, hast this wisdom which thou hast made to grow in thine heart”

And this speech of mine springeth not from myself, but I give utterance only to what He maketh me to utter.”

I am a man and dust and ashes, who tomorrow will become worms and corruption, and yet at this moment I appear like one who will never die.”

As is his death is my death; and as is his life is my life. Yet this man is stronger to work than I am”

We worship the sun according as our fathers have taught us to do, because we say that the sun is the king of the gods; some worship stones, and some worship wood, and some worship carved figures, and some worship images of gold and silver. And we worship the sun, for he cooked our food, and moreover, he illumned the darkness, and removed fear; we call him <Our King>, and we call him <Our Creator>, and we worship him as our god; for no man had told us that beside him there is another god. But we have heard that there is with you, Israel, another God Whom we do not know”

A woman of such splendid beauty had come to me from the ends of the earth! What do I know? Will God give me seed in her?”

A diferença das partes não altera o produto: “And he had 400 queens and 600 concubines. Now this which he did was not for fornication, but as a result of the wise intent that God had given unto him, and his remembering that God had said unto Abraham, <I will make thy seed like the stars of heaven for number, and like the sand of the sea.> And Solomon said in his heart, <What do I know? Peradventure God will give me ten children from each one of these women. My children shall inherit the cities of the enemy, and shall destroy those who worship idols.>”

to those after Christ, it was given to live with one woman under the law of marriage. And the Apostles laid down for them an ordinance: <as concerning Solomon no law had been laid down for him in respect of women, and no blame can be imputed to him in respect of marrying many wives. But for those who believe, the law and the command have been given that they shall not marry many wives, even as Paul saith, ‘Those who marry many wives seek their own punishment. He who marrieth one wife hath no sin.’ [I Corinthians, VII]>”

And they destroyed His light and cast themselves upon Him and they set a guard over His tomb wherein they had cast Him. And He came forth where they did not look for Him, and illumined the whole world, more especially the First Sea and the Last Sea, Ethiopia and Rôm. And He paid no heed whatsoever to Israel, and He ascended His former throne.”

And he gave her whatsoever she wished, everything on which great store was set in the country of Ethiopia, and camels and wagons, 6000 in number, which were laden with beautiful things of the most desirable kind, and wagons wherein loads were carried over the desert, and a vessel wherein one could travel over the sea, and a vessel wherein one could traverse the air (or winds) [!], which Solomon had made by the wisdom that God had given unto him.

and she brought forth a man child, and she gave it to the nurse with great pride and delight.” “And the child grew and she called his name Bayna-Lehkem. And the child reached the age of 12 years, and he asked his friends among the boys who were being educated with him, and said unto them, <Who is my father?> And they said unto him, <Solomon the King.> And he went to the Queen his mother, and said unto her, <O Queen, make me to know who is my father.> And the Queen spake unto him angrily, wishing to frighten him so that he might not desire to go, <Why dost thou ask me about thy father? I am thy father and thy mother; seek not to know any more.> (…) And a second time, and a third time he asked her, and he importuned her to tell him. One day, she told him, <His country is far away, and the road thither is very difficult; wouldst thou not rather be here?> And the youth Bayna-Lehkem was handsome, and his whole body and his members, and the bearing of his shoulders resembled those of King Solomon his father, and his eyes, and his legs, and his whole gait [porte] resembled those of Solomon the King.”

His eyes are gladsome, like unto those of a man who hath drunk wine” “in those days Solomon had no children, except a boy who was 7 years old and whose name was Îyôrbe’âm (Rehoboam).”

I Co. 1:20-31: “Onde está o sábio? Onde o escriba?

Besides travailing with him and suckling him, what else had a woman to do with a son? A daughter belonged to the mother, and a boy to the father. God cursed Eve, saying, <Bring forth children in anguish and with sorrow of heart, and after thy bringing forth shall take place thy return to thy husband. As for this my son, I will not give him to the Queen, but I will make him king over Israel.”

For no man hated the place where he was born, and everyone loved the things of his native country.”

Since thou speakest in this wise, according to the law I myself am not the son of my father David, for he took the wife of another man whom he caused to be slain in battle, and he begot me by her; but God is compassionate and He had forgiven him. Who is wickeder and more foolish than men? and who is as compassionate and as wise as God? God had made me of my father, and thee had He made of me, according to His Will. And as for thee, O my son, thou fearer of our Lord God, do not violence to the face of thy father, so that in times to come thou mayest not meet with violence from him that shall go forth from thy loins, and that thy seed may prosper upon the earth. My son Rehoboam is a boy 6 years old, and thou art my firstborn son, and thou hast come to reign, and to lift up the spear of him that begot thee. Behold, I have been reigning for 29 years, and thy mother came to me in the 7th year of my kingdom; and please God, He shall make me to attain to the span of the days of my father. And when I shall be gathered to my fathers, thou shalt sit upon my throne, and thou shalt reign in my stead, and the elders of Israel shall love thee exceedingly; and I will make a marriage for thee, and I will give thee as many queens and concubines as thou desirest. And thou shalt be blessed in this land of inheritance with the blessing that God gave unto our fathers, even as He covenanted with Noah His servant, and with Abraham His friend, and the righteous men their descendants after them down to David my father. Thou seest me, a weak man, upon the throne of my fathers, and thou shalt be like myself after me, and thou shalt judge nations without number, and families that cannot be counted.” “Now Balt.âsôr, the King of Rôm, wished that I would give my son to his daughter, and to make him with his daughter king over the whole country of Rôm. For besides her he had no other child, and he had sworn that he will only make king a man who is of the seed of David my father. And if we rule there we shall be 3 kings. And Rehoboam shall reign here over Israel. For thus said the prophecy of David my father <The seed of Solomon shall become 3 heads of kingdoms upon the earth.>”

It is meet and right that thy dominion of Ethiopia shall be from the River of Egypt to the west of the sun (i.e., to the setting sun); blessed be thy seed upon the earth – and from Shoa to the east of India”

I the Lord thy God am a jealous God. I am He Who visited the sin of the father on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, and I perform mercy to a thousand, to ten thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

And Solomon lived for eleven years after the taking away of Zion from him, and then his heart turned aside from the love of God, and he forgot his wisdom, through his excessive love of women. And he loved very greatly the daughter of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, whose name was Mâkshârâ, and he brought her into the house wich he had made; and there were figures of the sun, moon, and stars in the roof thereof, and it was illumined by night as brightly as by day. Its beams were made os brass, and its roof of silver (…) and its floor was of blocks of sapphire stone and sardius.” “And she multiplied her sacrifices, and her worship, and her folly, according to the stupidity of the Egyptians” “and she spoke to him with honeyed words, and with the tender speech of women, and with the sweet smile that accompanied the presentment of an evil deed, and with the turning of the face and the assumption of a look of good intent, and with the noddling of the head. With actions of this kind she caused his heart to turn away from his good intent, and she enticed him to the evil of her work, wishing to drag him down into the folly of the foolish service of idols through carelessness. And as the deep sea drawed down into its depths the man who cannot swim, until the water overwhelmed him and destroyed his life, even so did that woman wish to submerge Solomon the King.”

Thy son had carried away thy Lady Zion, thy son whom thou hast begotten, who springed from an alien people into which God had not commanded you to marry, that is to say, from an Ethiopian woman, who is not of thy colour, and is not akin to thy country, and who is, moreover, black.”

And thy kin is her kin, for ye are all the children of Ham. And God, having destroyed of the seed of Ham 7 kings, had made us to inherit this city, that we and our seed after us may dwell therein for ever. And as concerning Zion, the will of God had been performed, and He had given her unto them so that they may worship her. And as for me, I will neither sacrifice to nor worship thine idols, and I will not perform thy wish.” “Who was wiser than Solomon? yet he was seduced by a woman. Who was more righteous than David? yet he was seduced by a woman. Who was stronger than Samson? yet he was seduced by a woman. Who was handsomer than ‘Amnôn? yet he was seduced by Tamar the daughter of David his father. And Adam was the first creation of God, yet he was seduced by Eve his wife. And through that seduction death was created for every created thing.”

Come now, and consider, which was the greater of the two, the sin of his father David or the sin of his son Solomon? David caused Uriah to be slain in battle by means of a plan of deceit so that he might take his wife Bêrsâbêh (Bathsheba), the mother of Solomon; and he repented, and God had compassion on him, And when he was dying he advised his son Solomon, saying, <Kill Joab as he killed ‘Amêr (Abner), and kill Shimei because he cursed me>; and he performed the will of his father and slew them after the death of David his father. And Solomon killed no one except his brother when he wished to marry the Samênâwât, a sulamita, the wife of his father David whose name was ‘Abîs (Abishag).”

And therefore the children of Ishmael became kings over Tereb, and over Kebet, and over Nôbâ, and Sôba, and Kuergue, and Kîfî, and Mâkâ and Môrnâ, and Fînkânâ, and Arsîbânâ, and Libâ, and Mase’a, for they were the seed of Shem. And Isaac reigned over Judah and over Amôrêwôn, and over Kêtêwôn, and Îyabûsêwôn, and Fêrzêwôn, and Eêwêwôn, and Kêkêdewôn, and Rômyâ, and Ansôkyâ (Antiochia), and Sôryâ (Syria), and Armenia, and Felesteêm (Palestine), And Ethiopia, and Edom, and Philistia, and Îyôâb, and Amalek, and Phrygia, and Babylon, and Yônânest, and Ebrâyast. For as God sware He gave all kingdoms to the seed of Shem, and an exalted throne and dominion to the seed of Shem, even as his father Noah, by the word of God, blessed his son Shem, saying, <Be lord to thy brethren and reign over them.>”

And the Queen said unto her nobles: <Speak ye now, and swear ye by the heavenly Zion that ye will not make women queens or set them upon the throne of the kingdom of Ethiopia, and that no one except the male seed of David, the son of Solomon the King, shall ever reign over Ethiopia, and that ye will never make women queens.[!]>” “E se depois desse dia for achado qualquer homem que observe todos os seus costumes antigos, sua casa será pilhada, e ele e sua esposa e suas crianças deverão ser condenados.”

And thus the eastern boundary of the kingdom of the King of Ethiopia is the beginning of the city of Gâzâ in the land of Judah, that is, Jerusalem; and its boundary is the Lake of Jericho, and it passed on by the coast of its sea to Lêbâ and Sâbâ; and its boundary goes down to Bîsîs and ‘Asnêt; and its boundary is the Sea of the Blacks and Naked Men [?], and goes up Mount Kêbêrênêyôn into the Sea of Darkness, that is to say, the place where the sun setted and its boundary extended to Fênê’êl and Lasîfâlâ and its borders are the lands near the Garden (Paradise)”

David waged war wheresoever he pleased; no man conquered him, on the contrary, whosoever attacked him was conquered. (…) This I found among the manuscripts of the Church of Sophia in Rôm/Constantinople.”

He performed many miracles, some of which are written down and some of which are not, even as said John the Evangelist, the son of Zebedee”

Moses spake unto God and said, <Shew me Thy Face.> And God said unto Moses, <No one can look upon My Face and live, but only as in a mirror. Turn thy face to the west and thou shalt see in the rock the mirroring of My Face.> And when Moses saw the shadow of the Face of God, his own face shone with a brightness which was 7x brighter than the sun, and the light was so strong that the children of Israel could not look upon his face except through a veil. And thereupon he saw that they did not desire to look upon the Face of God”

And the daughters of Cain with whom the angels had companied conceived, but they were unable to bring forth their children, and they died. And of the children who were in their wombs, some died, and some came forth; having split open the bellies of their mothers they came forth by their navels. And when they were grown up and reached man’s estate they became giants, whose height reached unto the clouds”

I was with Daniel in the den, and I was with Jonah in the belly of the great fish, and I was with Joseph in the pit, and I was with Jeremiah in the well fed from the lake. I stand under the deepest deep so that the mountains may not sink down under the waters”

A estranha autobiografia: “Wearied and miserable, they made Him sad when they rejected Him and hated Him; but strong and glorious, what could sadden Him when they brought false charges against Him? For He Himself knew His Godhead, and He knew His glory, and He new Himself.”

And in it is the throne of the Most High, which is surrounded with fire, and 4 beasts bear it in their place, which is the 6th heaven. And a throne goeth up to the 7th heaven, the habitation of the Father”

The first summary of the contents of the K.N. was published by Bruce as far back as 1813”

Nenhum livro religioso faz a apologia do tempo presente nem é best-seller imediato.

when Nectanebus II, the last native king of Egypt, fled from Egypt he went to Macedon, where he established himself as a magician. Here he became acquainted with Queen Olympias, who wished to find out from him if her husband, Philip, intended to put her away. An intimacy sprang up between Nectanebus and Olympias, and he appeared to the queen one night in the form of the god Amen of Libya, arrayed in all the attributes of the god, and begot Alexander the Great. Tradition transferred the horns of Amen to Alexander, and ancient Arab writers call Alexander <Dhu’l-Karnên>, i.e. <provided with two horns>, a title that translates exactly one of the titles of Amen, <Sept abui>.”

The Tabernacle of the Law had much in common with the arks or divine tabernacles of the Babylonians and Egyptians, which formed the places of abode of figures of gods or their most characteristic emblems.” “The Ark of the Law which Menyelek [David Son or Grandson] covered and stole from the Temple of Jerusalem was probably a copy of that made by Moses, and to all intents and purposes it was a rectangular box, made of hard wood plated with gold, and measuring about 4ft. long, 2ft. 6inc. wide, and 2ft. 6in. deep. It was provided with a cover upon which rested the Mercy seat and figures of the Cherubim.”

Apologies: “A full discussion of every portion of the work, with extracts giving the original texts of the authorities used and quoted by Isaac [o copista ou inspirado a escrever o Kebra Nagast], would fill another volume, and the cost of printing, paper, and binding is now so great that the idea of producing such a book has been abandoned.”

Primeira versão integral do texto: Abhandlungen der Königlich Bayerischen Akademie, Munich, 1909.

reference may be made here to a series of chapters which try to prove that the kings of the Moabites, Philistines, Egyptians, Persians, Babylonians and the Byzantines, are of Semitic origin. The fantastic legends which the author invented or reproduced contain much falsified history and bad philology, but it would be interesting to know their source and their author; these chapters seem to suggest that he was a Semite, probably a Jew.”

And when the mother of this Queen was with child of her she saw a fat and handsome-looking goat, and she looked upon him with greedy desire, and said, <How handsome the beast is! And how handsome its feet are!> And she longed for it after the manner of women who are with child. And when the afore-mentioned daughter was fashioned completely in the womb of her mother, she had onefoot like the foot of a man and another like the foot of a goat. (…) she did not want to marry any man because of her malformed foot; and she continued in her virginity until she began to reign.” PIN-PON! Versão alcorânica menos lisonjeira: “Jalâl ad-Dîn says that Solomon thought of marrying Balkîs [Makeda], but could not bring himself to do so because of the hair on her feet and legs. The devils who were always in attendance on Soloom removed the hair by the use of some infernal depilatory, but it is doubtful if even then Solomon married her.”

HISTORY  OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE: Subterfúgio: Polêmicas Agostinianas e Maometanas

Vol. III

CHAPTER 33

“the terrible Genseric [Gizericus]; a name, which, in the destruction of the Roman empire, has deserved an equal rank with the names of Alaric and Attila. The king of the Vandals [território espanhol] is described to have been of a middle stature, with a lameness in one leg, which he had contracted by an accidental fall from his horse. His slow and cautious speech seldom declared the deep purposes of his soul”

“and the fair complexions of the blue-eyed warriors of Germany [vândalos] formed a very singular contrast with the swarthy [trigueiro] or olive hue which is derived from the neighborhood of the torrid zone [mouros].”

“the calendar of martyrs received on both sides a considerable augmentation.” Belo eufemismo.

“Careless of the distinctions of age, or sex, or rank, they employed every species of indignity and torture, to force from the captives a discovery of their hidden wealth. The stern policy of Genseric justified his frequent examples of military execution: he was not always the master of his own passions, or of those of his followers; and the calamities of war were aggravated by the licentiousness of the Moors, and the fanaticism of the Donatists [ordem de padres excomungados].”

“The youth of Augustin had been stained by the vices and errors which he so ingenuously [artfully!] confesses; but from the moment of his conversion to that of his death, the manners of the bishop of Hippo were pure and austere: and the most conspicuous of his virtues was an ardent zeal against heretics of every denomination; the Manichaeans, the Donatists, and the Pelagians [“não somos afetados pelo Pecado Original; o livre-arbítrio de cada qual permite chegar de forma autônoma ao Bem Supremo…”], against whom he waged a perpetual controversy. When the city [Hippo], some months after his death, was burnt by the Vandals, the library was [un]fortunately saved, which contained his voluminous writings; 232 separate books or treatises on theological subjects,[*] besides a complete exposition of the psalter and the gospel, and a copious magazine of epistles and homilies. According to the judgment of the most impartial critics, the superficial learning of Augustin was confined to the Latin language; and his style, though sometimes animated by the eloquence of passion, is usually clouded by false and affected rhetoric. But he possessed a strong, capacious, argumentative mind; he boldly sounded the dark abyss of grace, predestination, free will, and original sin; and the rigid system of Christianity which he framed or restored, has been entertained, with public applause, and secret reluctance, by the Latin church.”

[*] “Such, at least, is the account of Victor Vitensis (de Persecut. Vandal. 50. 1. 100. 3); though Gennadius seems to doubt whether any person had read, or even collected, all the works of St. Augustin (see Hieronym. Opera, tom. I p. 319, in Catalog. Scriptor. Eccles.). They have been repeatedly printed; and Dupin (Bibliotheque Eccles. tom. III p. 158-257) has given a large and satisfactory abstract of them as they stand in the last edition of the Benedictines. My personal acquaintance with the bishop of Hippo does not extend beyond the Confessions, and the City of God [ao fim e ao cabo as duas obras que realmente importam].

“In his early youth (Confess. i. 14) St. Augustin disliked and neglected the study of Greek; and he frankly owns that he read the Platonists in a Latin version, (Confes. vii. 9) Some modern critics have thought that his ignorance of Greek disqualified him from expounding the Scriptures; and Cicero or Quintilian would have required the knowledge of that language in a professor of rhetoric.”

The church of Rome has canonized Augustin, and reprobated Calvin. Yet as the real difference between them is invisible even to a theological microscope, the Molinists are oppressed by the authority of the saint, and the Jansenists are disgraced by their resemblance to the heretic. In the mean while, the Protestant Arminians stand aloof, and deride the mutual perplexity of the disputants (see a curious Review of the Controversy, by Le Clerc, Bibliotheque Universelle, tom. XIV pp. 144-398.) Perhaps a reasoner still more independent may smile in his turn, when he peruses an Arminian Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans.”

Uma verdadeira Babilônia no coração do continente negro, aliás: “The streets of Carthage were polluted by effeminate wretches, who publicly assumed the countenance, the dress, and the character of women. If a monk appeared in the city, the holy man was pursued with impious scorn and ridicule”

OS SETE DORMINHOCOS

“Among the insipid legends of ecclesiastical history, I am tempted to distinguish the memorable fable of the Seven Sleepers; whose imaginary date corresponds with the reign of the younger Theodosius, and the conquest of Africa by the Vandals. When the emperor Decius persecuted the Christians, seven noble youths of Ephesus concealed themselves in a spacious cavern in the side of an adjacent mountain; where they were doomed to perish by the tyrant, who gave orders that the entrance should be firmly secured by a pile of huge stones. They immediately fell into a deep slumber, which was miraculously prolonged without injuring the powers of life, during a period of 187 years. At the end of that time, the slaves of Adolius, to whom the inheritance of the mountain had descended, removed the stones to supply materials for some rustic edifice: the light of the sun darted into the cavern, and the Seven Sleepers were permitted to awake. After a slumber, as they thought of a few hours, they were pressed by the calls of hunger; and resolved that Jamblichus, one of their number, should secretly return to the city to purchase bread for the use of his companions. The youth (if we may still employ that appellation) could no longer recognize the once familiar aspect of his native country; and his surprise was increased by the appearance of a large cross, triumphantly erected over the principal gate of Ephesus. His singular dress, and obsolete language, confounded the baker, to whom he offered an ancient medal of Decius as the current coin of the empire; and Jamblichus, on the suspicion of a secret treasure, was dragged before the judge. Their mutual inquiries produced the amazing discovery, that two centuries were almost elapsed since Jamblichus and his friends had escaped from the rage of a Pagan tyrant. The bishop of Ephesus, the clergy, the magistrates, the people, and, as it is said, the emperor Theodosius himself, hastened to visit the cavern of the Seven Sleepers; who bestowed their benediction, related their story, and at the same instant peaceably expired.

The origin of this marvellous fable cannot be ascribed to the pious fraud and credulity of the modern Greeks, since the authentic tradition may be traced within half a century of the supposed miracle. James of Sarug, a Syrian bishop, who was born only two years after the death of the younger Theodosius, has devoted one of his 230 homilies to the praise of the young men of Ephesus. Their legend, before the end of the 6th century, was translated from the Syriac into the Latin language, by the care of Gregory of Tours. The hostile communions of the East preserve their memory with equal reverence; and their names are honorably inscribed in the Roman, the Abyssinian, and the Russian calendar. Nor has their reputation been confined to the Christian world. This popular tale, which Mahomet might learn when he drove his camels to the fairs of Syria, is introduced as a divine revelation, into the Koran. The story of the Seven Sleepers has been adopted and adorned by the nations, from Bengal to Africa, who profess the Mahometan religion; and some vestiges of a similar tradition have been discovered in the remote extremities of Scandinavia. This easy and universal belief, so expressive of the sense of mankind, may be ascribed to the genuine merit of the fable itself. We imperceptibly advance from youth to age, without observing the gradual, but incessant, change of human affairs; and even in our larger experience of history, the imagination is accustomed, by a perpetual series of causes and effects, to unite the most distant revolutions. But if the interval between two memorable aeras could be instantly annihilated; if it were possible, after a momentary slumber of 200 years, to display the new world to the eyes of a spectator, who still retained a lively and recent impression of the old, his surprise and his reflections would furnish the pleasing subject of a philosophical romance.

The scene could not be more advantageously placed, than in the two centuries which elapsed between the reigns of Decius and of Theodosius the Younger. During this period, the seat of government had been transported from Rome to a new city on the banks of the Thracian Bosphorus; and the abuse of military spirit had been suppressed by an artificial system of tame and ceremonious servitude. The throne of the persecuting Decius was filled by a succession of Christian and orthodox princes, who had extirpated the fabulous gods of antiquity: and the public devotion of the age was impatient to exalt the saints and martyrs of the Catholic church, on the altars of Diana and Hercules. The union of the Roman empire was dissolved; its genius was humbled in the dust; and armies of unknown Barbarians, issuing from the frozen regions of the North, had established their victorious reign over the fairest provinces of Europe and Africa.”

“Two Syriac writers, as they are quoted by Assemanni (Bibliot. Oriental. tom. I pp. 336, 338), place the resurrection of the Seven Sleepers in the year 736 (A.D. 425) or 748 (A.D. 437), of the aera of the Seleucides. Their Greek acts, which Photius had read, assign the date of the 38th year of the reign of Theodosius, which may coincide either with A.D. 439, or 446. The period which had elapsed since the persecution of Decius is easily ascertained; and nothing less than the ignorance of Mahomet, or the legendaries [hagiólogos], could suppose an interval of 300 or 400 years.”

The Failure of a Secular Life

The pain-monger came home

from a hard day’s torture.

He came home with his tongs.

He put down his black bag.

O Fracasso de uma Vida Secular

O promotor de desgraças chegou em casa

depois de um duro dia de torturas.

Ele chegou com suas pinças.

E deixou no chão sua sacola negra.

Deveria me aborrecer por não me darem uma segunda chance, se eu nunca lhes dei uma primeira?

O remorso morde ou morre

Seja gentil: exclua o gentio

Mesmo o escrofuloso tem seus dias bons

Falso acha falso verdadeiro.

My zen master is a grand old fool.

I caught him worshipping me yesterday,

so I made him stand in a foul corner

with my rabbi, my priest, and my doctor.”

mothers, statues, madonnas, ruins-

I’m stripped, suckled, weaned,

I leap, love, anonymous as insect.”

To love you

is to live

which I have

promised my body

I will never write!”

they pass without looking

Of one another

they have the deepest need

The great ones pass

(…)

they pass

like stars of different seasons

like meteors of different centuries

Fire undiminished

by passing fire

laughter uncorroded

by comfort

they pass one another

without touching without looking

needing only to know

the great ones pass”

I always wanted to set fire to your houses. I’ve been in them. Through the front doors and the back. I’d like to see them burn slowly so I could visit many and peek in the falling windows. SEÇÃO I

“And you seek shade and shelter by reason of the heat of the sun, and the earth also burns with growing heat, and so you cannot tread on the earth, or on a rock by reason of its heat.”

PRIMEIROS VAMPIROS, GOLIAS, CANIBAIS, HOMENS TECNOLÓGICOS E BRUXAS: AVATARES DO DIABO, O BELO ANJO VIRIL: PARTOS DO PACTO

“And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: <Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.> And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: <I fear ye will not  indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.> And they all answered him and said: <Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.> Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And they were in all 200; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And these are the names of their leaders: Samlazaz [?], their leader, Arakiba, Rameel, Kokabiel, Tamiel, Ramiel, Daniel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal, Azazel [Lulu, segundo outras passagens, adiante, relacionadas com MEU nome], Armaros, Batarel, Araqiel, Zaqiel, Shamsiel, Satariel, Turiel, Jomjael, Sariel. These are their chiefs of tens. And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was 3,000 ells [varas]: Who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones. And [the luciferean angel] Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. (…) Baraqijal (taught) astrology, Kokabiel the constellations, Ezeqeel the knowledge of the clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun, and Sariel the course of the moon.

O CASTIGADOR

“And again the Lord said to Raphael: <Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire.”

“And destroy all the spirits of the reprobate and the children of the Watchers, because they have wronged mankind.”

Esses Zentraedis!

Algo banguela e sem prece dentes.

“And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin”

Wie gehen Reisen: “And I saw a deep abyss, with columns of heavenly fire, and among them I saw columns of fire fall, which were beyond measure alike towards the height and towards the depth. And beyond that abyss I saw a place which had no firmament of the heaven above, and no firmly founded earth beneath it: there was no water upon it, and no birds, but it was a waste and horrible place. I saw there 7 stars like great burning mountains, and to me, when I inquired regarding them, The angel said: <This place is the end of heaven and earth: this has become a prison for the stars and the host of heaven. And the stars which roll over the fire are they which have transgressed the commandment of the Lord in the beginning of their rising, because they did not come forth at their appointed times.>”

“<Here shall stand the angels who have connected themselves with women, and their spirits assuming many different forms are defiling mankind and shall lead them astray into sacrificing to demons as gods (…) And the women also of the angels who went astray shall become sirens.> And I, Enoch, alone saw the vision, the ends of all things: and no man shall see as I have seen.”

“This place is the prison of the angels, and here they will be imprisoned for ever.” Uriel

“This is the spirit which went forth from Abel, whom his brother Cain slew, and he makes his suit [prece] against him till his seed is destroyed from the face of the earth, and his seed is annihilated from amongst the seed of men.” Raphael

En. 26:6: “And I marveled at the rocks, and I marveled at the ravine, yea, I marveled very much.”

En 33:1-4: “And from thence I went to the ends of the earth and saw there great beasts, and each differed from the other; and birds also differing in appearance and beauty and voice, the one differing from the other. And to the east of those beasts I saw the ends of the earth whereon the heaven rests, and the portals of the heaven open. And I saw how the stars of heaven come forth, and I counted the portals out of which they proceed, and wrote down all their outlets, of each individual star by itself, according to their number and their names, their courses and their positions, and their times and their months, as Uriel the holy angel who was with me showed me. He showed all things to me and wrote them down for me: also their names he wrote for me, and their laws and their companies.”

“And from thence I went towards the west to the ends of the earth, and saw there three portals of the heaven open such as I had seen in the east, the same number of portals, and the same number of outlets.”

“Now three Parables were imparted to me”

“Then shall the kings and the mighty perish And be given into the hands of the righteous and holy.”

“He knows before the world was created what is for ever and what will be from generation unto generation. Those who sleep not bless Thee: they stand before Thy glory and bless, praise, and extol, saying: <Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Spirits:>”

“This first is Michael, the merciful and long-suffering; and the second, who is set over all the diseases and all the wounds of the children of men, is Raphael; and the third, who is set over all the powers, is Gabriel; and the fourth, who is set over the repentance unto hope of those who inherit eternal life, is named Phanuel.”

“A Fragment of the Book of Noah

In the year 500, in the 7th month, on the 14th day of the month in the life of Enoch. In that Parable I saw how a mighty quaking made the heaven of heavens to quake, and the host of the Most High, and the angels, a thousand thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand [1 trilhão]”

“And on that day were two monsters parted, a female monster named Leviathan, to dwell in the abysses of the ocean over the fountains of the waters. But the male is named Behemoth, who occupied with his breast a waste wilderness named Duidain, on the east of the garden where the elect and righteous dwell, where my grandfather was taken up, the 7th from Adam, the 1st  man whom the Lord of Spirits created.” O dragão do deserto sobrevém…

“For lead and tin are not produced from the earth like the first: it is a fountain that produces them, and an angel stands therein, and that angel is pre-eminent.”

Origem das termas (ou seria dos pólos?): “for when those angels are punished in these waters, these water-springs shall change their temperature, and when the angels ascend, this water of the springs shall change and become cold. And I heard Michael answering and saying: <This judgement wherewith the angels are judged is a testimony for the kings and the mighty who possess the earth.> Because these waters of judgement minister to the healing of the body of the kings and the lust of their body; therefore they will not see and will not believe that those waters will change and become a fire which burns for ever.”

Louvado seja Penemue: “And the fourth was named Penemue: he taught the children of men the bitter and the sweet, and he taught them all the secrets of their wisdom. And he instructed mankind in writing with ink and paper, and thereby many sinned from eternity to eternity and until this day. For men were not created for such a purpose, to give confirmation to their good faith with pen and ink. For men were created exactly like the angels, to the intent that they should continue pure and righteous, and death, which destroys everything, could not have taken hold of them, but through this their knowledge they are perishing, and through this power it is consuming me.”

“And I saw the holy sons of God. They were stepping on flames of fire: Their garments were white, And their faces shone like snow.”

A cueca cagada de Deus: “And with them the Head of Days, His head white and pure as wool, And His raiment indescribable.” Guarda a cabeça dos dias!

SEÇÃO III

ENGENHOSO, ADMITO: “On that day the day is longer than the night by a ninth part, and the day amounts exactly to ten parts and the night to eight parts. And the sun rises from that fourth portal, and sets in the fourth and returns to the fifth portal of the east thirty mornings, and rises from it and sets in the fifth portal. And then the day becomes longer by two parts and amounts to eleven parts, and the night becomes shorter and amounts to seven parts. And it returns to the east and enters into the sixth portal…” “And on that day the night becomes longer than the day, and night becomes longer than night, and day shorter than day till the thirtieth morning, and the night amounts exactly to ten parts and the day to eight parts.” “…and the year is exactly as to its days 364.” “…and his light is sevenfold brighter than that of the moon; but as regards size they are both equal.”

THE DARK SIDE OF THE EARTH: “And I saw another course, a law for her, how according to that law she performs her monthly revolution.” “And in certain months she alters her settings, and in certain months she pursues her own peculiar course. In two months the moon sets with the sun: in those two middle portals the third and the fourth. She goes forth for seven days, and turns about and returns again through the portal where the sun rises, and accomplishes all her light: and she recedes from the sun, and in eight days enters the sixth portal from which the sun goes forth.”

“And if 5 years are added together the sun has an overplus of 30 days, and all the days which accrue to it for one of those 5 years, when they are full, amount to 364 days. And the overplus of the sun and of the stars amounts to 6 days: in 5 years 6 days every year come to 30 days” “In 3 years there are 1,092 days, and in 5 years 1,820 days, so that in 8 years there are 2,912 days. For the moon alone the days amount in 3 years to 1,062 days, and in 5 years she falls 50 days behind”

“And the leaders of the heads of the thousands, who are placed over the whole creation and over all the stars, have also to do with the 4 intercalary days, being inseparable from their office, according to the reckoning of the year, and these render service on the 4 days which are not reckoned in the reckoning of the year.“ ???

“And the first quarter is called the east, because it is the first: and the second, the south, because the Most High will descend there, yea, there in quite a special sense will He who is blessed for ever descend. And the west quarter is named the diminished, because there all the luminaries of the heaven wane and go down. And the fourth quarter, named the north, is divided into 3 parts: the first of them is for the dwelling of men: and the second contains seas of water, and the abysses and forests and rivers, and darkness and clouds; and the third part contains the garden of righteousness.“ “Seven great islands I saw in the sea and in the mainland: 2 in the mainland and 5 in the Great Sea.”

“And the names of the sun are the following: the first Orjares, and the second Tomas. And the moon has four names: the first name is Asonja, the second Ebla, the third Benase, and the fourth Erae.” “and her circumference is empty, void of light.”

“And in the days of the sinners the years shall be shortened, And their seed shall be tardy on their lands and fields, And all things on the earth shall alter, And shall not appear in their time: And the rain shall be kept back (…) And the whole order of the stars shall be concealed from the sinners, And the thoughts of those on the earth shall err concerning them, Yea, they shall err and take them to be gods.”

“And I observed the heavenly tablets, and read everything which was written and understood everything, and read the book of all the deeds of mankind, and of all the children of flesh that shall be upon the earth to the remotest generations.”

“And now, my son Methuselah, all these things I am recounting to thee and writing down for thee! and I have revealed to thee everything, and given thee books concerning all these: so preserve, my son Methuselah, the books from thy father’s hand, and see that thou deliver them to the generations of the world.”

“And these are the names of the leaders who divide the four parts of the year which are ordained: Milki’el, Hel’emmelek, and Mel’ejal, and Narel. And the names of those who lead them: Adnar’el, and Ijasusa’el, and ‘Elome’el– these three follow the leaders of the orders, and there is one that follows the three leaders of the orders which follow those leaders of stations that divide the four parts of the year. (…) These are the names, and the orders, and the leaders of those heads of thousands”

SEÇÃO IV

“And in it there shall be the first end. And in it a man shall be saved; And after it is ended unrighteousness shall grow up, And a law shall be made for the sinners. And after that in the third week at its close A man shall be elected as the plant of righteous judgement, And his posterity shall become the plant of righteousness for evermore. And after that in the fourth week, at its close, Visions of the holy and righteous shall be seen, And a law for all generations and an enclosure shall be made for them. And after that in the fifth week, at its close, The house of glory and dominion shall be built for ever. And after that in the sixth week all who live in it shall be blinded, And the hearts of all of them shall godlessly forsake wisdom. And in it a man shall ascend; And at its close the house of dominion shall be burnt with fire, And the whole race of the chosen root shall be dispersed. And after that in the seventh week shall an apostate generation arise, And many shall be its deeds, And all its deeds shall be apostate. And at its close shall be elected The elect righteous of the eternal plant of righteousness, To receive sevenfold instruction concerning all His creation.” “And the first heaven shall depart and pass away, And a new heaven shall appear, And all the powers of the heavens shall give sevenfold light. And after that there will be many weeks without number for ever, And all shall be in goodness and righteousness, And sin shall no more be mentioned for ever.”

“For ye shall have manifold experiences on the earth. For ye men shall put on more adornments than a woman, And coloured garments more than a virgin: In royalty and in grandeur and in power, And in silver and in gold and in purple, And in splendour and in food they shall be poured out as water.”

“And see ye not the sailors of the ships, how their ships are tossed to and fro by the waves, and are shaken by the winds, and are in sore trouble? And therefore do they fear because all their goodly possessions go upon the sea with them, and they have evil forebodings of heart that the sea will swallow them and they will perish therein. Are not the entire sea and all its waters, and all its movements, the work of the Most High, and has He not set limits to its doings, and confined it throughout by the sand And at His reproof it is afraid and dries up, and all its fish die and all that is in it; But ye sinners that are on the earth fear Him not.”

SEÇÃO V

“And after some days my son Methuselah took a wife for his son Lamech, and she became pregnant by him and bore a son. And his body was white as snow and red as the blooming of a rose, and the hair of his head and his long locks were white as wool, and his eyes beautiful. And when he opened his eyes, he lighted up the whole house like the sun, and the whole house was very bright. And thereupon he arose in the hands of the midwife, opened his mouth, and conversed with the Lord of righteousness. And his father Lamech was afraid of him and fled, and came to his father Methuselah. And he said unto him: <I have begotten a strange son, diverse from and unlike man, and resembling the sons of the God of heaven; and his nature is different and he is not like us, and his eyes are as the rays of the sun, and his countenance is glorious. And it seems to me that he is not sprung from me but from the angels, and I fear that in his days a wonder may be wrought on the earth. And now, my father, I am here to petition thee and implore thee that thou mayest go to Enoch, our father, and learn from him the truth, for his dwelling-place is amongst the angels.>”

Testament of Solomon, son of David, who was king in Jerusalem, and mastered and controlled all spirits of the air, on the earth, and under the earth. By means of them also he wrought all the transcendent works of the Temple. Telling also of the authorities they wield against men, and by what angels these demons are brought to naught.

Italics: commentator

“Whenever men come to be enamoured of women, I metamorphose myself into a comely female; and I take hold of the men in their sleep, and play with them. And after a while I again take to my wings, and hide me to the heavenly regions. I also appear as a lion, and I am commanded by all the demons. I am offspring of the archangel Uriel, the power of God.”

Beelzeboul cried aloud with a mighty voice, and shot out a great burning flame of fire; and he arose, and followed Ornias [a súcubo-leoa], and came to Solomon.”

“I then asked of the demon if there were females among them. And when he told me that there were, I said that I desired to see them. So Beelzeboul went off at high speed, and brought unto me Onoskelis, that had a very pretty shape, and the skin of a fair-hued woman; and she tossed her head” “fair complexion, but her legs were those of a mule.” “Oftentimes, however, do I consort with men in the semblance of a woman, and above all with those honey-colored”

Asmodeus also appears in Tobit 3:8, and is ultimately derived from the Avestan demon Aeshma-daeva (<demon of wrath>).” Meu ancestral remoto. “Wherefore also my star is bright in heaven, and men call it, some the Wain, and some the dragon’s child. I keep near unto this star. So ask me not many things; for thy kingdom also after a little time is to be disrupted, and thy glory is but for a season. And short will be thy tyranny over us; and then we shall again have free range over mankind, so as that they shall revere us as if we were gods, not knowing, men that they are, the names of the angels set over us.”

“<my business is to plot against the newly wedded, so that they may not know one another. (…) I transport men into fits of madness and desire, when they have wives of their own, so that they leave them, and go off by night and day to others that belong to other men; with the result that they commit sin, and fall into murderous deeds.> And I adjured him by the name of the Lord Sabaôth, saying: <Fear God, Asmodeus, and tell me by what angel thou art frustrated.> But he said: <By Raphael, the archangel that stands before the throne of God.>” “<meu negócio é tramar contra os recém-casados, para que não mais se reconheçam.

“Eu fui, antes, anjo, no paraíso de outrora, e intitularam-me Beelzeboul. E agora eu controlo todos os que foram confinados no Tártaro. Mas até mesmo eu tenho um filho, e ele caça no Mar Vermelho. And I Solomon, seeing them, questioned them and said: <Who are ye?> But they, with one accord, said with one voice: <We are of the 33 elements of the cosmic ruler of the darkness.> And the first said: <I am Deception.> The second said: <I am Strife.> The third: <I am Klothod, which is battle.> The fourth: <I am Jealousy.> The fifth: <I am Power.> The sixth: <I am Error.> The seventh: <I am the worst of all, and our stars are in heaven. Seven stars humble in sheen [fracas em brilho], and all together. And we are called as it were goddesses. We change our place all and together, and together we live, sometimes in Lydia, sometimes in Olympus, sometimes in a great mountain.>

“As Plêiades parecem ser evocadas em Jó 38:31, na versão revisada: <Pode você amarrar o bando das Plêiades, Ou afrouxar as cordas de Órion?> Elas tinham uma influência maligna. A reunião de espíritos malignos no número de 7 é comum nos folclores judeu e babilônico. Como exemplos, posso citar o Testamento de Rubens, II, e os sete espíritos maus do Novo Testamento. Possivelmente é uma referência aos Sete Planetas (<estrelas que se movem juntas>).”

or…

GOOD VS. EVIL – Expanded Edition: 7th Strike: Solomon’s Rise & Fall

“forasmuch as the spirit is a wind, contrive something according to the wisdom given in thee by the Lord thy God, and deign to send a man able to capture it. And behold, King Solomon, I and my people and all my land will serve thee unto death. And all Arabia shall be at peace with thee, if thou wilt perform this act of righteousness for us.” The Zora’s Wasteland

“And there was a stone, the end stone of the corner lying there, great, chosen out, one which I desired lay in the head of the corner of the completion of the Temple. And all the workmen, and all the demons helping them came to the same place to bring up the stone and lay it on the pinnacle of the holy Temple, and were not strong enough to stir it, and lay it upon the corner allotted to it.”

“§119. And after 7 days, being reminded of the epistle of Adares, King of Arabia, I called my servant and said to him: <Order thy camel [Epona] and take for thyself a leather flask [empty bottle], and take also this seal [carta de amigo da família real]. And go away into Arabia to the place in which the evil spirit blows [wind or shadow or spirit temple]; and there take the flask, and the signet-ring [a ocarina] in front of the mouth of the flask, and (hold them) towards the blast of the spirit [dungeon boss’ attacks]. And when the flask is blown out, thou wilt understand that the demon is (in it). Then hastily tie up the mouth of to flask, and seal it securely with the seal-ring, and lay it carefully on the camel and bring it me hither. [emerald or stone] And if on the way it offer thee gold or silver or treasure [rupees] in return for letting it go, see that thou be not persuaded. But arrange without using oath to release it. And then if it point out to the places where are gold or silver, mark the places [map & compass / checkpoints] and seal them with this seal. And bring the demon to me. And now depart, and fare thee well.”

MAURÍCIO GONTIJO TEM TODA A RAZÃO (“O GÊNIO DA LÂMPADA?”)!: “Then the youth did as was bidden him [<Hey! Listen!>]. And he ordered his camel [Epona’s Song – drink milk!], and laid on it a flask, and set off into Arabia. And the men of that region would not believe that he would be able to catch the evil spirit [NPCs estúpidos]. And when it was dawn, the servant stood before the spirit’s blast, and laid the flask on the ground, and the finger-ring on the mouth of the flask. And the demon blew through the middle of the finger-ring into the mouth of the flask, and going in blew out the flask. But the man promptly stood up to it and drew tight with his hand the mouth of the flask, in the name of the Lord God of Sabaôth [or the Three Goddesses]. And the demon remained within the flask. And after that the youth remained in that land three days to make trial [Sun’s Song]. And the spirit no longer blew against that city. And all the Arabs knew that he had safely shut in the spirit [Kakariko’s Village].”

Once as I sat in the first heaven, of which the name is Ameleouth — I then am a fierce spirit and winged, and with a single wing, plotting against every spirit under heaven. I was present when Moses went in before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and I hardened his heart.”

“<How wast thou found in the Red Sea?> <In the Exodus I caused the Pharaoh to pursue after the children of Israel. And I followed with him and all the Egyptians. And we all came up upon the Red Sea. And it came to pass when the children of Israel had crossed over, the water returned and hid all the host of the Egyptians and all their might. And I remained in the sea, being kept under this pillar. But when Ephippas [The Son of Satan] came, being sent by thee, shut up in the vessel of a flask, he fetched me up to thee.” Objetivo final do jogo: Maniqueu, o Equilíbrio do Bem do Mal.

“This legend of the heavy cornerstone and of the spirits supporting a column in the Temple reappears in the Georgian Acts of Nouna in the fourth century. There it is a huge wooden column that is lifted by spirit-agency, when the king and workmen had failed to move it into place. The spirits support it in the air before letting it sink into its place. These Acts will shortly appear in an English translation by Miss Wardrop in the forthcoming number of the Studie Biblica, Clarendon Press, 1898.”

“And I was glad in spirit in my kingdom, and there was peace in my days. And I took wives of my own from every land, who were numberless. And I marched against the Jebusaeans, and there I saw Jebusaean, daughter of a man: and fell violently in love with her, and desired to take her to wife along with my other wives.”

“And when I answered that I would on no account worship strange gods, they told the maiden not to sleep with me until I complied and sacrificed to the gods. I then was moved, but crafty Eros [o ardiloso cupido] brought and laid by her for me five grasshoppers, saying: <Take these grasshoppers, and crush them together in the name of the god Moloch; and then will I sleep with you.> And this I actually did. And at once the Spirit of God departed from me, and I became weak as well as foolish in my words. And after that I was obliged by her to build a temple of idols to Baal, and to Raphan, and to Moloch, and to the other idols.”
